Photo showing Prague's famous Charles Bridge
The city has grown up around the River Vltava and this prominent waterway divides the city into two main regions. A series of historical bridges, including the famous Charles Bridge, span the River Vltava and connect the two sides.

The towering Gothic spires of the St. Vitus Cathedral are clearly visible on the skyline. This dramatic Roman Catholic building is actually part of the Prague Castle and dates back to the middle of the 14th century.

Cruises along the River Vltava are a popular way to sightsee in the very heart of the city, with trips lasting anywhere up to three hours and including evening dinner cruises. Sights visible during cruises on the River Vltava include the city's castle, cathedral, parliament, National Theatre and also the ancient Vysehrad Castle.

The rooftops of Prague have become quite a striking feature of the city, with their almost uniform colour and appearance being very distinctive.

One of the most historical and interesting parts of the city, the Little Quarter (Lesser Town) is known locally as the Mala Strana and stands on the western banks of the River Vltava. Baroque architecture is now in plentiful supply within the Little Quarter, following a serious fire in this part of the city during the mid-16th century.

The St. George Basilica is located within the grounds of the Prague Castle complex and although the exterior architecture is quite beautiful, it is the interior where the main attractions await. Inside, the acoustics are renowned and regular concerts are therefore staged here throughout the year.
